This is a very mature, realistic and deliberately paced espionage story. It is definitely not cut from the same cloth as the Bond or Bourne films. It takes its time with the complexities of the narrative and its look at the international ‘spy game’ of the Cold War in the early 1970s. The cast are all great and the ‘period’ details are amazingly accurate. There is very little action in this one, consisting of a couple ‘right to the point’ shootings and the somewhat gory after-effects of some off-screen violence. My one main complaint is that, at times, the non-linear structure and diverse number of players make the myriad of story connections tough to follow. This one requires your attention but, if you’re the patient sort, you’re in for a well told, well acted ‘cat n mouse’ game of deception and paranoia set in a very believable environment and atmosphere. Viewers looking for endless, quick cutting ‘shaky cam’ and wall to wall action best look elsewhere.
